UChicago CS Faculty Receive Industry Grants From J.P. Morgan, Google
UChicago CS faculty members Aaron Elmore, Michael Franklin, and Chenhao Tan received funding from financial firm JP Morgan Chase and tech company Google.
Tan received a 2022 JP Morgan Faculty Research Award for his project, “Generating Multimodal Explanations for Financial Decisions.” The program provides $50,000 in funding to “empower the best research thinkers across AI today” in order to “advance cutting-edge AI research to solve real-world problems.”
The award to Tan joins separate funding from the Google Research Scholar program for “Robustifying NLP models via Learning from Explanations” – building new protections against vulnerabilities and common mistakes of language AI systems by making their decisions more transparent.
Elmore and Franklin’s Google funding comes from the company’s Data Acquisition, Processing, and Analysis (DAPA) group. The gift builds upon a connection between the ChiData research group and Google researchers, facilitating talks, internships, and other points of engagement.
