Annual Review
The department assesses the progress of each PhD student at least once a year. Evaluation of progress is performed through a detailed online survey that students complete. Results are shared with each student’s research advisor(s), who are encouraged to give detailed feedback online via the survey and offline in one-on-one meetings. At the completion of the process, aggregate results are shared with all research faculty in a department-wide faculty meeting.
Following the evaluation, each student will receive a letter, indicating whether the student is making satisfactory progress in the program, and whether they meet the obligations of their support. In case of problems, difficulties, or less than satisfactory progress, students are encouraged to seek advice and help from their advisor, and if needed, from the Director of Graduate Studies, to set and achieve goals to make satisfactory progress. Students consistently missing department milestones or advisor expectations may be put on academic probation status, with specific feedback and goals to help them return to good standing.
Students who consistently fail to make satisfactory progress may be asked to leave the program. Students who are remiss in their obligations as Teaching or Research Assistants will be warned, and in severe cases may lose a fraction of their support.
